A 14-year-old Sikh boy has been withdrawn by his family from a north London school after the management banned the teenager from carrying a 'kirpan' or religious dagger.

The boy was told not to wear the five-inch (12.5 cm) kirpan at the Compton School in Barnet after Governors ruled that it was a "health and safety risk".

Under Sikhism, the shweathed scimitar is one of the five "articles of faith" that must be carried at all times.

The school governors have said that they have tried to find a compromise and a place remains open for the boy.

They suggested that he wear a two-innch version of the dagger wielded into a sheath. But the offer was rejected by the boy's parents who said the miniature dagger was a replica and not a genuine kirpan.

The family has taken him out of the school.

The boy first started carrying the religious dagger two years ago when he was baptised as a Sikh.

However, according to his older brother Ravjeet Singh, at the start of term last month, he was told it was no longer allowed.

"He was greeted by the head teacher at the school and was asked if he was wearing the kirpan," he told the BBC's Asian Network. "He said yes and then they said, 'we're going to have to turn you away."

Re-KirpanBy: Nihung Singh Khalsa | 13-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Dear Friends, Firstly Kirpan is a religious symbol, as it is the article of faith and it is for defense not for offence (Show me an Example from world till date where it used for offence) and if you talk about keeping hairs then please tell me why most of the goddess keep unshorn hair for example- Jesus, Ram, Krishna, Shiva, Sai baba so if keeping hairs are unhygienic why they live like that, as all of them were messenger of almighty and they live as per the command of almighty living in more natural way. May Akal (Almighty) bless you all with the wisdom and spirituality to understand your religion and sense of respecting towards other religion. NIHUNG SINGH KHALSA

How can you?By: Sajjan Pandit | 17-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward It is mind bogglingly stupid. How can you? What purpose does it serve, just to carry a kirpan when there are so many other tenets in the religion to be followed as more important priorities....
KirpanBy: Khalsa | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward It is what you areFor baptized sikh it is essential to keep 5K's all the time on their body. It has nothing to do with people or with religious leaders. It has deep spiritual meaning and also represent historic symbol of Sikh sacrifices. Most of the so called sikhs you are talking about, they are not baptized sikh, they just take themselves sikh because they parents or grandparents were sikhs, it doesn't make them sikh, unless they follow the principles and rules of Sikhism, all need to take Amrit!! Sikhi came into existense to fight against voilence and to remove the evil roots of caste system, and giving equal rights to men and women. Wherever Sikh goes people feel protected. Kirpan was used to protect themselves and any poor, helpless or any person in need. This is an instrument of non-violence used in defence. Any person who takes Amrit has to carry all 5k's all the time with them, all are taught before given Amrit. As being a sikh and carrying this is a very big responsibility.
FAITH AND USEFULNESSBy: NIRANJAN | 15-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward YOU CLAIM THAT SIKHS MUST CARRY THE 5Ks ALL THE TIME. THAT WAS GOOD AT ONE TIME AND HAD SOME MEANING. IF SUCH PRACTICES ARE AN IMPEDIMENT TO THE NORMAL LIFE OF PEOPLE THEN THEY MUST BE MODIFIED. NO ONE WANTS A PERSON WITH A KNIFE NEXT TO THEM FOR THE FEAR OF VIOLENCE. SO, RELIGIOUS LEADERS GROW UP AND TRY TO LIVE IN A WORLD THAT HAS CHANGED SINCE THE DAYS OF YORE WHEN THE CONDITIONS IN INDIA WERE MUCH DIFFERENT. SUCH RELIGIOUS FANATISM IS NOT GOOD FOR THE SIKHS AND DEFINITELY NOT FOR THE COUNTRY!
Carrying kirpans to schoolBy: Padam Singh | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward For God's sake what is wrong with our religious fanatics today. I have never seen a Sikh boy carrying a kirpan to school in India. Would the parents of the boy allow him to go to school if they came to know others were allowed to carry knives also. Then you have the turban issue. I have lost 3 Sikh friends in two wheeler accidents because they were no wearing helmets. One was a girl. Just to avoid wearing helmets any excuse will do. I have seen more and more Sikhs in India wearing a golf cap or just a handkerchief when dressed casually. But when a foreign country passes orders, there is a hue and cry
