It is still not decided whether the Tatas will remain in Singur or not. But a couple of local mobile phone operators have christened the area around the Nano factory as ‘Tata Motors’.
Location indicator in cell phones allows the user to know the place one is moving in. As one moves along with a handset, names of places flash on the phone’s screen. Now, if one enters into Singur, the indicator reads ‘Tata Motors’ as one approaches the Nano factory. Till recently, the indicator flashed Singur or Khaserbheri or Gopalnagar.
An official of a mobile service provider said: “A service provider chooses an indicator according to the location of a frequency tower in any area. Since the tower was erected near the Tata Motors factory, we found it appropriate to identify the place with the factory.”
A representative of another service provider said, “It was not preplanned. It just happened that the engineers who were installing the tower thought it appropriate to name it as Tata Motors.”
With the Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee still adamant on her demand that 300 acres be returned from inside the Nano site, work at the plant remains suspended and Tatas have reportedly started to transfer the plant to another location. While the fate of the factory is still uncertain, the mobile phone users on the Durgapur Expressway and the adjoining areas continue to know the area as Tata Motors.
