Sion resident docs protest, want better living facilities

Resident doctors at Sion Hospital on Saturday staged a protest demanding better accommodation. They have have been seeking bigger dormitories for nearly two years. The issue gained momentum after KEM Hospital recently got a swanky, multi-storeyed building for its resident doctors.

"If doctors have to work round the clock, their living conditions have to be habitable enough. Three months ago, the then dean of the hospital had assured us that we would get bigger residential quarters. But the promises have remained on paper," said a member of the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors.

There are around 800 resident doctors at Sion Hospital. One of the floors in the newly-opened OPD building on the hospital premises was to be for the resident doctors' accommodation. However, the plan has not materialised.

Dr Suleman Merchant, who recently took over as dean of Sion Hospital, said he was doing everything in his capacity to provide better living conditions for the resident doctors.

"I have been working on this issue relentlessly since I became dean. We have appealed to higher authorities to provide the necessary budget," Merchant said.
