The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is striving to submit its report — regarding the riots — before the April 30 deadline set by the Supreme Court,SIT chief R K Raghavan said during a two-day visit to Gujarat. SIT is investigating Zakia Jafri’s plea that names Chief Minister Narendra Modi and 62 others as accused in one of nine riot cases being investigated by it.

Raghavan added: “We are working on it (the report),but I cannot say anything now. The hearing of the case is in the Supreme Court tomorrow and we are working hard to meet the deadline.”

Raghavan was also asked if the SIT would seek an extension from the apex court to complete the report. He said, “it is for the Supreme Court to decide”.

Till date,SIT has questioned Modi, former Home Minister Gordhan Zadafia, and a host of BJP leaders, bureaucrats as well as police officers named by Jafri in her petition.

Raghavan refused to comment on VHP leader Pravin Togadia’s allegation that an SIT official humiliated him and his lawyers.
