Six cylinders per society: flat owners in a fix

"I am not averse to the decision of providing six subsidised cylinders to a household a year. But I want equality in the execution of the order," said Colonel (Retd) Mohan Joseph, owner of an apartment that has piped gas (reticulate) facility. Joseph was reacting to the move of gas agencies to restrict the number of subsidised gas cylinders to six per society irrespective of the number of flats in them.

"I don't mind paying extra money. But what the authorities are saying is that societies having reticulate system are rich, so they can pay extra for LPG. If that is the case, people staying in bungalows are economically better than us. Then why should they have six cylinders at subsidised rate? This disturbs equality," said Joseph, also the chairman of resident welfare association, Montvert-2 on Sus Road.

The move has created a lot of dissent among flat owners. "I got a number of calls from worried flat owners in various societies that we supply LPG to. But we are helpless. One connection is given to one society. So if the number of subsidised cylinders are reduced to six, we are forced to implement it for one society irrespective of the flats in the society," said Kirti Kamble, owner of Natraj Gas, which has more than 7,000 reticulate system customers.

Flat owners are still contemplating their next move. "We just came to know about this. This is totally unfair. But we don't know what to do and where to protest. But once a consensus is made among all affected societies, we will protest against this move" said businessman Ritesh Shetiya who lives in Hyde Park, Market Yard.

A solution to the problem was pointed out by Mohan Joseph, who said individually every flat owner should get equivalent of six LPG cylinders' supply. "While reading the gas-meter, every individual's consumption should be quantified and six times an LPG cylinder's value (ie 14.2 kg x 6) should be charged at subsidised rate and the rest at non-subsidised rate."
