Skeletons found in Midnapore

In a rerun of human skeletons being excavated from several places in East Midnapore and West Midnapore, the villagers of Rampur village in East Midnapore on Wednesday have found two skeletons while they were digging a pond in the vicinity. A saari was found with one of those two skeletons. Villagers have informed the police. A senior police official said the skeletons will be sent for DNA test. However, it seems the skeletons are of those who are still missing since the Nandigram firing incident.

No charge against Left cadres fabricated: Hakim

Kolkata: Responding to CPM's allegation of slapping false cases against its leaders and cadres by the Trinamool-run government, West Bengal urban development minister Firad Hakim on Wednesday said no fabricated charges have been made against any CPI-M leaders in connection with Benachapra skeleton recovery case and the Nandigram firing incident.

"Law will take its own course. Those involved in Benachapra skeleton recovery case and the Nandigram firing incident would be punished. The Chief Minister has taken up a slew of development projects in Junglemahal and a conspiracy is being hatched to create anarchy in these districts," Hakim said.

"Many Trinamool workers and leaders were killed and many went missing after CPI-M sponsored attacks. All these incidents took place during Left regime. But we have not taken revenge," he said countering CPI-M's charges that the government has been taking `political revenge' against the Opposition.

'Execute HC order on phasing out of old public vehicles'

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the government to carry out the order on the issue of phasing out public vehicles that are more than 15 years old in the Kolkata Metropolitan areas (KMA). The Division of the Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghosh and Justice Mrinal Kanti Chaudury has directed the state to file a report in the from of affidavits on the steps taken to implement the court order in two months. On July 18, 2008, the Calcutta High Court had directed the state to phase out the 15 years old public vehicles in the KMA areas and later, the High Court had extended the dateline to August 1, 2009. Later, the High Court had passed the order on grounds that the old vehicles were polluting the environment. On Wednesday, environmentalist Subash Dutta said the government did not implement the order of the High Court properly. The illegal auto-rickshaws were plying on the roads, he said.
