South Korean naval unit rescued a North Korean vessel from pirates.

A South Korean naval unit rescued a North Korean ship from an attack by pirates in waters off Somalia, Seoul military officials said.

"Our unit operating off Somalia today rescued a North Korean vessel from pirates," a spokesman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

"After detecting a distress signal from the North Korean vessel, our destroyer immediately sent a helicopter. The pirates came close to the North Korean ship but retreated as our helicopter approached."

The incident comes amid frosty relations between the governments in Seoul and Pyongyang.
