Daughters of slain police constable Krishnanand Rai have sought a CBI probe into his killing.
The demand comes a day after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati sacked Minister of Fisheries Jamuna Nishad for his alleged involvement in the murder.
“It’s hard to imagine why the cops are not arresting the two main accused in the case — Nishad and Shailendra Madhesiya — for the killing of their brave colleague," Dipika and Supriya Rai told the Indian Express on Monday.
“There is no progress in the case over the last 24-36 hours. This has made us lose faith in the government at Lucknow. We demand a CBI probe into the matter urgently,” the daughters said at their native village in Mau district.
When asked whether they are satisfied with the compensation of Rs 24 lakh announced by the UP government, they said, “We want justice. That will only come when the killers of my father are punished.”
Krishnanand, a constable posted at the Kotwali Police Station in Maharajganj district, was killed in a firing on Saturday night when a mob led by Nishad and supporters attacked the Kotwali.
"He was known among his colleagues as one who possessed crisis resolution skills. The UP Police has lost a hockey striker in him. He was part of the police hockey team as a centre forward,” said Satya Prakash, his elder brother.
Others in the village, like Jata Shankar, Krishnanand’s schoolmate remembered him as a man who cared for everyone, irrespective of caste, creed or colour. “Whenever he came to his village he made sure to visit everyone,” said Shankar.
