Inspired by Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, Mahindra United plans to go deep into the Mumbai slums to unearth soccer talents. The club has selected Dharavi and Madanpura for its ‘corporate social working’ scheme and the project is set to begin in a couple of months.
“We have already visited the slum areas of Dharavi and Madanpura a few weeks ago. We have also located a few grounds there. We will launch our talent hunt programme in those areas very soon,” Mahindra CEO Henry Menezes told The Indian Express. Menezes also said that the club is assured of financial support from a few Mumbai-based corporate houses.
“We sincerely believe that we would be able to spot 15 to 20 talented youngsters from these areas and will nurture them for the future. We will also provide education to them,” Menezes added.
Mahindra’s youth development programme was a big success last year. A total of 111 school students from all over Mumbai attended football coaching clinics.
