SMC to regularise illegal cellphone towers

The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has asked cellphone service providers to get their towers installed atop residential and commercial buildings registered as many of them are unauthorised.

The civic body issued notices to various companies in this regard after a recent survey by its planning and development department found that of the total 1,421 mobile phone towers installed in the city, 794 were unregistered.

"We are bound to issue them regularisation certificate after companies submit certificates of the Department of Telecommunication... As per norms, for each tower we collect a fee of Rs 25,000. We will see whether these companies have followed the guidelines or not," said Jeevan Patel, deputy commissioner (planning and development), SMC.
