The Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO) celebrated the National Science Day here on Friday.

All the labs of CSIO were kept open for general public in the forenoon. A large number of visitors including students from various schools, colleges, universities and general public went around the laboratories of the organisation. They interacted with the scientists and were given exposure to the technologies developed and being developed at the CSIO.

Later,Dr Ashwagosha Ganju,Director,Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment,Chandigarh, delivered a lecture on ‘Snow study for avalanche defence and climate change in Himalaya’.

He emphasised that snow is an important constituent of the earth’s crust and modulates weather conditions, initiates formation of glaciers, regulates water flow in various river systems, maintains water balance and is an intriguing material for scientists since it can cause avalanches that can cause destruction to life and property.

He stressed upon the need of sensors and instruments for continued recording to study the climate change and strengthening environmental protection. He explained various avalanche control structures such as snow nets, snow bridges, snow rakes, etc.

CSIO Director Dr Pawan Kapur, while welcoming the chief guest, highlighted the significance of National Science Day and said that scientific methodology is required in every walk of life and also highlighted the achievements of CSIO.
