'I think education has played a very important role in making me what I am.'

Describing himself as "aam aadmi", Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says he has reached the top post because of his education which plays an important role in moulding one's life.

"I am an aam aadmi (common man). If I can become the Prime Minister, then so can you. I came from a very ordinary, lower-middle class family. It is because of my education that I am what I am.”

"So I think education has played a very important role in making me what I am," the economist-turned-Prime Minister said during a talk organised by a TV channel with a group of children at his residence on the occasion of Children's Day.

He was asked how an aam aadmi can become a Prime Minister.

Singh was dismissive of the opposition calling him a "weak" Prime Minister.

"It does not make much of a difference to me. I think if I am doing something right, then my conscience will tell me that. To criticise is the opposition's job. I am not afraid of that," he said.

Appearing relaxed, 77-year-old Singh with his wife Gursharan Kaur seated by his side, answered with ease questions from children ranging from Maoists violence, coalition politics, move to abolish tenth board examination, poor students not getting education, his fondness for blue turban and his favourite sweet.

You are right Mr Prime MinisterBy: Pankaj | 15-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Indians should be and are proud that they have a prime minister whose credentials and not his place of birth. I am sorry for those who were taught by their parents that they would rule because their ancestors did. I know they feel that the world is not what it was. I know that they feel that this is not how it should have been. But let us all, from all castes and creed, and political background accept that this is how it is, and this is how it is going to be. Let us celebrate and build on our tradition providing equal opportunity to EVERY child born in India.
That is the worryBy: Prasad | 15-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Indeed... That is the real worry! Anyone can become PM of India!
PM-TO BE A PMBy: A.ABDUL RAHIM | 15-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward EVERYBODY COMMENTS ON OUR PM'S ANSWER TO KIDS ON BECOMING A PM... THOUGH SONIYA GANDHI SELECTED MANMOHAN SINGH AS PM, HE IS NOT A MEAN MAN & HE IS NOT SELECTED ON THE GROUND THAT HE IS LOYAL TO SONIYA.EVERYBODY IN THE CONGRESS ARE LOYAL TO SONIYA BUT SHE IS NOT SELECTING THEM AA PM. BUT SHE IS SELECTING FOR HIS HIGH EDUCATION;FOR HIS HIGH ECONOMIC WISDOM;ABOVE ALL, FOR HIS UNCORRUPTED NATURE. COULD ANYBODY, WHO COMMENTS HIM,TELL THAT THESE QUALITIES OF OUR PM ARE THE REASONS TO BECOME A PM... EVEN SONIYA GANDHI & RAGUL GANDHI ARE NOY HAVING THESE QUALITIES, THOUGH THEY HAVE POPULOUS SUPPORT.
justifying culprit to run govtBy: suchithra | 16-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward PM also has a quality of justifying the culprit Raja to ensure that his government run the show for 5 more years
TO BE A PMBy: N.V.SANKARAN | 15-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward You are right about Mr. Manmohan Singh and his credentials and I have great respect for him. But unfortunately in the Congress party, it is not merit that counts. The ground reality is that all those from outside the Nehru-Gandhi family who had become the PMs earlier were only stop-gap arrangements.
Aam Admi By: J.M.Manchanda | 15-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Dr. Manmohan Singh's credentials are perfect but one wonders whether he would have become PM even if thee were no Sonia Gandhi around to 'renounce' office. Inthe murky sphere of politics, it is possible that his elevation had a lot to do with the fact that he can not challenge Mrs. Gandhi politically and holds office at her pleasure.Let not the children of today be misled into believing that one can become PM by sheer dint of merit. You need more than that!
Greatness thrust on MMSBy: Hero Vaz | 15-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward What a laugh!!! MMS should admit that he came into prominence because Narasimha Rao decided to make use of him in, under world pressure, his economic reforms and to show to the world that he meant business by making an economist the Finance Minister. MMS was handily available for this. MMS became PM by the choice of Sonia Gandhi and by exception because no one else would be her puppet. And the support to stay as PM should not be forgotten. It is not only Sonia but also the criminals and scoundrels in the Party who made it possible. MMS is PM not by merit or by his leadership qualities. He is PM by a quirk of circumstances. Some people are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust on them. MMS belongs to the last mentioned category.
