Soft state, hard words

  • How much credibility does West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee think his state government now has? He might have been partly chastened by the storm of anger caused by the West Bengal government’s decision to capitulate miserably to the CPI (Maoist) by accepting, on their terms, the release of a police officer they had kidnapped in a daring raid on a police station — apparently in exchange for the government not opposing the release on bail of several prisoners accused of links to the Naxalites. But his response is truly laughable. The day after he surrendered to the Naxalites, he thundered angrily that he would not surrender to the Maoists. The day after they showed him who was boss, he declared that he would teach them a lesson. Does he even know how weak he now appears?

Bhattacharjee also took a moment to attack his home secretary, Ardhendu Sen, for reports that he had made an impolitic comparison between the “swap” and, among others, the Kandahar and Rubaiya Sayeed episodes. And yet, his words were revealing. Where Bengal’s top civil servant in charge of law and order apparently shrugged his shoulders and said that such things would happen, because India was a “soft” state, Bhattacharjee chose to take exception to Sen speaking out of turn. He did not engage with the accusation implicit in Sen’s words, a concern which all those who believe that the time has come for the state to re-impose its writ in India’s lawless interior must share. What people need is strong reassurance that the state it relies on for security is not weak, is not soft; but neither is Bhattacharjee willing to give either his state’s residents or those beyond that reassurance, nor is it the case that, even if he did, he would be believed.

    ... contd.

Gautama Buddha? ReallyBy: Vic | 26-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward I am unsure how the mainstream media conferred on this know nothing do nothing guy called Budhadev Bhattachary a Gautama Buddha variety 'Halo'. They should have conferred a Budhu and not Budha on him. The sooner he disappears the better for Bengal
Biased reportBy: AKS | 26-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Media affinity particularly of IE with Congress and its hate against BJP and CPM are not a new findings. Quattrochi was let free by congis.Bank's account abroad matter is closed now. Media is silent. Because Congis knows how to promote corruption, sycophancy; how to protect afzals etc with keeping media silent by offering them plum facilities and awards every now and then. This party has created a division in the society on the basis of caste, religion, region for their benefits. They have knowlingly created a lot of poors and illiterate people to woo them easily by showing off an italian and her son and daughter before them at election time. They know well that literate and educated lot is not their vote banks. But this mass is also vulnerable to other organised groups too. Naxals feed on this lot only. Country will have to pay price for congis wrong policied now or later. and media will continue to dance to the tune of ruling party.
Release of Policeman by NAXALSBy: Rajesh Vyas | 26-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward I wonder what was wrong in getting the release of an Ordinary policeman by releasing a few NAXALS? I am sure if some good for nothing MLA, MP,Minister Corporator, Politician or their KIN was kidnapped, the GOVERNMENTS anywhere would have more than capitulated to demands of the kidnappers. All this HUNGAMA is being made by Media and everyone else becuase the kidnapped person (AN ORDINARY POLICEMAN) was a CHILD of the lesser GODS!!!!In India, the lives of the poor are at a discount, aren't they? Should we let the unprotected die at the hands of NAXALS.How does one explain the release of Kashmiri terrorists in 1989 in exchange for Mifti's daughter when V P singh was the PM and the MUFTI was the union Home Minister?Democracy, I believe, also means equality for all. Democracy is more than casting your vote for the good for nothing politicians every now and then. The West Bengal Government has done the right thing, for once!!!!! Rather than the HOOPLA, ERADICATE THE NAXALS!!!!!
ReasonBy: Apaaraa | 26-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward The reason for the opposition is that this inept state govt gave in to the Maoist demands for releasing one policeman against Rs. 9 lakh looted from a bank, 2 policemen killed, 14 women remanded to custody for being hardcore maoists were released (if you see their pictures you will ask yoursleves what are ordinary housewives doing in prison, they appear to have been jailed because they demanded better life and freedom from commy corruption). Last not least 2 police men are still missing for 3 months now, and this corrupt govt and its CM didn't even ask for their release in the exchange deal. When all fact are known, it really smells fishy doesn't it.
Exchange for NoneBy: Vinay | 26-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward The reason for opposition is that once done, it opens the flood gates like the cases in J
Soft state, hard wordsBy: Ashok | 26-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward You say: "When a government faced by a major security crisis loses so completely its nerve, and the confidence of the people of India is so shaken about whether that government is up to even the most basic of the tough law-and-order decisions that are its constitutional preserve, then there are few alternatives left."Just because, Kandhar incident happened in full glare of media and amidst hulla-gulla of affected families of the hostages ansd despite all opposition parties agreeing to NDA's decision to free terrorists in exchange of innocent hostages -- we cotinue to hear the criticism of the NDA govt from the oppositon and media. Now, when Left is under attack as media has exposed them, they are on defensive.I'm sure there must be many cases in Cong rule when such swaps have taken place but the media keeps quite.
