Soha Ali Khan gets candid about her famous parents, her films, doing television, marriage and more.
How were the celebrations for your dad,Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s 70th birthday last month?
Oh,it was good fun, especially because generally dad is not open to the idea of celebrating his birthdays. But this being his 70th,it was special, and mom (Sharmila Tagore) had put together this wonderful programme, where there was dance, dastangoi (a form of storytelling) and excellent food.
What did you gift him?
Dad is a man of very few needs, and if he has one suit,he refuses to have a second, wondering what he will do with two! But this was special, and I gifted him a blue corduroy Cashmere suit.
Are your parents happy with the way your career as an actress is shaping up?
They always wonder why I complicated my life by deciding to become an actress. But now seeing me happy and independent they are quite okay with it.
Is it true that you are learning to cook because your boyfriend, actor Kunal Khemu is a foodie?
I am learning to cook because I felt the need to do so. Also I wouldn’t feel completely independent if I have to rely on someone to cook my meals. Of course I don’t deny that churning out a good dish will get me brownie points with both my mom and Kunal.
What do you like best about acting?
I like the fact that you are not doing something routine. There’s a lot of personal satisfaction when portraying different characters, not to mention the perks like travelling, endorsements, etc.
Which genre of cinema excites you the most?
I am a big fan of thrillers, horror and whodunits, though I’ve never acted in one. My forthcoming release Ek Accident has an element of the supernatural, but it is not exactly a horror film.
How do you feel being part of Deepa Mehta’s Winds Of Change, based on Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children?
I am terribly excited mainly because the film is based on such a great book. Such books are written only once in a while.
After Godrej Khelo Jeeto Jiyo, would you contemplate doing another TV show?
As long as it’s fun I wouldn’t mind doing it. Television means insane work though, because at times I was shooting three episodes a day and being an anchor I was constantly thinking on my feet. But the money was awesome, and I could get myself a wonderful car and shift to an upscale area like Bandra in Mumbai.
Would you think of doing an item number if an offer came along?
I am not averse to experimenting with anything interesting. It will be wonderful to be part of a song which may go on to become more famous than the movie!
What about marriage plans?
No man can compare to independence is what I tell my mom and anyone else who asks me. But frankly a woman knows when the time is right for her to tie the knot, and when I feel I should,I definitely will.
