Somali pirates capture Seychelles fishing vessel

The 33-foot-long vessel,Faith,was seized some 240 nautical miles north of Mahe.

Somali pirates hijacked a Seychelles fishing vessel with its seven crew members and were headed towards the lawless Horn of Africa country,a statement said on Saturday.

The 33-foot-long vessel,Faith,was seized on Friday some 240 nautical miles north of Mahe,the main island of the Seychelles archipelago,Transport Minister Joel Morgan said in the statement.

“The families of the fishermen have been informed. The pirates are heading northwest towards Somalia,” he said.

Somali pirates have extended their range deep into the Indian Ocean and the latest capture occurred in the Seychelles exclusive economic zone.

Despite patrols by international navies off Somalia,pirates from the war-torn state have continued to capture ships.

More than 500 crew members and at least 31 foreign vessels are currently in the hands of Somali pirates,according to Ecoterra,an NGO monitoring maritime activity in the region.
