Gujarat Congress MLAs, who held a meeting on Tuesday, passed a resolution that the party president Sonia Gandhi will decide about the new state Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader.
The meeting of elected Congress MLAs, first since the declaration of results, was held in the state Assembly in the presence of central party observers -- Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and party's state in-charge Mohan Prakash.
During the meet, all the newly-elected Congress legislators passed a resolution authorising Sonia Gandhi to choose the new leader.
"Now party president Sonia Gandhi will take a decision on the new CLP leader in Gujarat in a couple of days," said Delhi chief minister while talking to reporters after the meeting.
Congress is facing a peculiar situation regarding the selection of the Opposition leader here, as two of their leaders Shaktisinh Gohil, who was earlier the CLP leader and Arjun Modhwadia, the state party president lost the polls.
The contenders for the post include former chief minister Shankarsinh Vaghela, senior leader Vitthal Radadia and seven-time MLA Mohansinh Rathwa, among others.
Dikshit met all the 59 MLAs one by one and took their view on who should be the CLP leader of the state, sources in the party said, adding, some MPs had also come to put forward their point along with some other state party leaders.
Dikshit will go to Delhi and inform the party president about the views of the MLAs and other leaders after which the central leadership will finalise the name of CLP leader, they added.
The CLP also passed another resolution congratulating Rahul Gandhi for his appointment as new vice president of the party. It also hailed party's Jaipur Declaration adopted at the concluding day of the Chintan Shivir and AICC meeting, as a historical document.
"Newly-elected Congress MLAs also appreciated the hard work of all party workers and leaders during the state assembly elections," Dikshit said.
