Sonia on graft is like Pak on terror, says Gadkari; Cong wants an apology

The Congress called this “gutter-level” talk and demanded an apology.

BJP president Nitin Gadkari said here today that Sonia Gandhi’s assurance that her party and the UPA were fighting corruption is similar to Pakistan’s assurance that it’s fighting terrorism. The Congress called this “gutter-level” talk and demanded an apology.

“Sonia Gandhi says she will fight corruption. Her statement is like Pakistan’s statement that they will fight against terrorism,” said Gadkari. He said Congress workers did not believe in what their president says, just as the people of Pakistan don’t believe in what their government says.

He said that Sonia Gandhi has become the “symbol of fascism”,and that if the government was trying to bring an Emergency-like situation, the BJP would not sit idle.

Referring to the Congress as a “mother-son” party, the BJP president said that while Sonia is supreme, the others are irrelevant. “Congress is a mother-son party. She is the ruler and other are servants,” he said. addrresing BJP workers at a party convention at Mahajati Sadan in Kolkata.

The BJP failed to win a single seat in the last Assembly elections. But Gadkari urged party workers not to be disheartened “but prepare for 2014 Parliament elections”.

Slamming police action at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi to evict Baba Ramdev,Gadkari said it had become a “crime” to campaign against corruption. “What happened in Ramlila was Ravan Lila,” he said.

The BJP president also took a swipe at Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee who recently had criticised the BJP and RSS for providing what he called the infrastructure for the civil society to protest against the UPA government.

“Pranab Da wants to become Prime Minister. Maybe he can become Prime Minister. But he cannot become the president of Congress party. That post is reserved for the Gandhi family,” he said. He also questioned Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s support to the UPA on the issue of corruption in the Commonwealth and the 2G scams.

“We strongly condemn the extremely outrageous remarks made by the BJP chief against Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Gadkari has reduced the platform of BJP and national discourse to gutter-level politics. He should apologize for his remarks,” said Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarjan. “To compare the noble sentiments of the Congress president and her resolve to fight corruption to Pakistan fighting terrorism shows the mindset of Gadkari who comes from an ideology that breeds hatred, divisiveness and murder.”
