  • It is almost certain that the two top campaigners of the Congress, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, are not going to visit Amravati where President Pratibha Patil’s son Rajendra Shekhawat is locked in a keen contest with sitting MLA and Congress rebel Sunil Deshmukh.

Rahul Gandhi’s tour programme, received on Monday from party sources, mentions that he is visiting Tiwsa, just 30 km from Amravati, to campaign for party candidate Yashomati Thakur. But he is skipping Amravati, clearly cold-shouldering Shekhawat. Rahul is also going to campaign for Nilesh Parvekar at Yakama and Rahul Pugalia at Ballarpur in Chandrapur.

Amravati doesn’t figure in Sonia’s two-day campaign programme either. Congress media cell chief Sanjay Dutta said: “The third day programme of Soniaji is yet to be finalised.”

Till now, CM Ashok Chavan is the only high-profile leader to campaign for Shekhawat. Former CM Vilasrao Deshmukh and Jyotiraditya Scindia are slated to tour Amravati in the days to come.
