After Amritsar,Bathinda and Mohali, now Ludhiana will implement the Pangura (cradle) Scheme for abandoned newborns.
We will place a cradle in a room at Bal Bhawan and a bell outside. Whenever anyone places their baby on the cradle, they can ring the bell to intimate the authorities, said A K Sharma,Secretary of District Red Cross Society and Deputy Director Small Savings.
The abandoned children will be handed over to either of the two non-government al organisations Nishkam Sewa Ashram,Daad, and Swami Ganga Nand Bhooriwale International Dham,Talwandi Khurd.
Rahul Tewari,Deputy Commissioner,Ludhiana, said,We will start the scheme within a week. I had launched it in Bathinda in 2007 although no one left a child there, since then we did not receive any report on newborns being abandoned. We are hopeful of its success in Ludhiana.
Abandoning a child is a crime and if anyone wants to do so,we will appeal to them to leave the child in the pangura so that we can take care of them, he went on to add
Sharwan Kumar founder of Nishkam Sewa Ashram,Daad, though welcomed the step, raised doubts over it success. Although it is a good initiative of the district administration,I am doubtful about its success. Even we kept a cradle for more than three years outside our ashram but no one left their unwanted babies. However, during these years we did receive many abandoned kids and all were either thrown away in the fields or in the bushes.
