Soon,ordinance to set up private universities in state: Rajesh Tope

The state government will issue an ordinance on setting up private universities in the state,said higher and technical education minister Rajesh Tope on Monday.

The state government will issue an ordinance on setting up private universities in the state,said higher and technical education minister Rajesh Tope on Monday. Leading industrial houses,including Reliance Industries,have evinced keen interest in setting up private varsities in the state,he said.

Tope was talking to the media persons along the sidelines of a programme arranged in the University of Pune. “The state government will issue the ordinance after the nod from cabinet,” said Tope.

These varsities are expected to introduce specialised courses in modern and emerging sciences like biotechnology,nanotechnology and fuel cell technology,Tope said. “The government will also have a ‘socio-economic control mechanism’ in the Act to ensure that students from backward sections also benefit from it,” he said. Tope also said that the government has set up a committee under the chairmanship of former vice chancellor of University of Pune (UoP) Ram Takawale to give recommendations on the bifurcation of UoP. “The committee will come up with its recommendations soon,” he said.

He also said that a committee to recommend some revisions in the Maharashtra Universities Act has also been formed under the chairmanship of former chairman of University Grant Commission Arun Nigvekar.
