A letter purportedly written in the handwriting of alleged Maoist Soni Sori that surfaced in Delhi

A letter purportedly written in the handwriting of alleged Maoist Soni Sori that surfaced in Delhi on Friday alleged that she was “forced to undress and tortured by Dantewada SP Ankit Garg in police station” on the night of October 8. Presently,Sori is at a hospital in Kolkata undergoing medical check-up as directed by the Supreme Court.

While the letter was dispatched by Speed Post from Dantewada carrying the stamp of October 21,it carries the signature of Sori, and was reportedly written by her from Jagdalpur Central Jail and sent to rights activist Himanshu Kumar.

“SP Ankit Garg called me in a room of the police station on the night of October 8 from 12 midnight to 2.30 am,gave me electric shots, made me undress and severely tortured me,” reads the letter addressed to the Supreme Court.

“Who is responsible for my condition? I,a victim tribal woman, want to know this from the Supreme Court. I am also a sister-daughter of this country,” the letter says.

Though it is not clear whether the handwriting is hers or who sent the letter on her behalf,it adds to a series of allegations levelled by rights activists that Sori was tortured by the Dantewada police. Kumar was earlier based in Dantewada and ran an ashram there.

While the police have refuted all charges,Sori too had told The Indian Express on October 12,four days after she was tortured as alleged in the letter, that the police had not tortured her. Admitted in a Jagdalpur hospital then, she had received injuries a day before and it was alleged that she was beaten up in the Dantewada police station.

“I slipped in the bathroom and got injured. The police did not beat me up,” she had told The Indian Express in the Jagdalpur hospital.
