Sori to be taken out of C’garh for medical examination: SC

The court was hearing Sori's petition that she was tortured in police custody after her arrest from Delhi.

The Supreme Court has permitted the medical examination of tribal teacher and suspected Maoist activist Soni Sori outside Chhattisgarh and will pass an order tomorrow on where she would be sent for it.

A bench headed by Justice Altamas Kabir said that she should be sent to hospital outside the state for medical examination and asked the state government to name any convenient city where she can be taken while proposing the name of Kolkata,Nagpur and Bengaluru.

The bench decided to pass the order tomorrow after advocate Atul Jha appearing for the state government said that there was no objection to get her medically examined in other state.

The apex court was hearing a petition filed by Sori that she was tortured in police custody after her arrest from Delhi.

Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves,appearing for Sori,said that she was falsely implicated in a number of cases linking her to Maoist activities.

A suspected Maoist conduit,Sori has been accused by the police of receiving “protection money” from the Essar group. She was arrested on October 4 in south Delhi by a Chhattisgarh police team and taken to Dantewada for interrogation. Essar has denied giving funds to Maoists.
