The Aussie cultural department is probably calling it a big bang beginning. The Oz Fest, a showcase of Australian culture in India, will kick off with a performance by one of Down Under's music sensations, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu. A blind aboriginal singer, Gurrumul recently performed for Queen Elizabeth II at the diamond jubilee celebrations, and will take over Purana Qila on October 16 for the inaugural show of the Oz fest.
Gurrumul belongs to the Gumatj clan of the Elcho Island, a remote island off the coast of northern Australia. His high, soulful voice tells stories of the life and identity of his people, their connection with the land and its ancestral beings. Accompanying him at Purana Qila will be Australian didgeridoo virtuoso Mark Atkins and sitarist Anoushka Shankar.
