Akhilesh Yadav-led SP govt to launch Aasra housing scheme from Azam Khan’s district

The state government will launch its Aasra housing scheme for the urban poor, in which preference will be given to the minorites, by constructing the first colony in Urban Development Minister Azam Khan's home district Rampur.

The scheme is being executed by the State Urban Development Agency under the Department of Urban Employment and Poverty Allievation, which is held by Khan.

Earlier, on December 10, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had also launched the Hamari Beti Uska Kal scheme for providing financial assistance of Rs 30,000 to minority community girls, who have cleared Class X, from Rampur.

The Samajwadi Party government has scrapped the previous Mayawati government housing scheme for the urban poor, known as Manyavar Kanshiram Shahri Garib Awas Yojna, in which 50 per cent houses were given to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. In its place, Aasra scheme was launched with a provision of Rs 100 crore in the regular budget. In the first phase, there is a target of constructing 4,000 houses.

In Aasra scheme, preference will be given to those living in minority-dominated slums whose monthly income is up to Rs 6,000. Registered rickshaw pullers, OBCs and SCs people who do not own any house, and released manual scavengers will also be eligible. However, it will be mandatory that no family member of the beneficiary owns a house in an urban area.

The selection will be made through inviting applications and then a lottery draw. The allottees will not have the right to sell the houses for 15 years, but can transfer to their legal successors. The infrastructure facilities will be developed from the 25 per cent of the total budget under the scheme.

In Rampur, as many as 100 houses will be built to begin with. Land has been selected for the scheme in Magazine mohalla of Rampur. These houses will come up on an area of 13.37 hectares at the cost of Rs 15 crores. The colony will have street lights, solid waste management, and interlocking internal pathways.
