Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Thursday dismissed all talks about the formation of a third front before the 2014 Lok Sabha election saying that the issue can be discussed only after the results are declared and on the basis of seats won by various parties. He said that the SP will contest alone the next polls — not only in Uttar Pradesh but also in all other states.

At a press conference here on Thursday, Mulayam kept everybody guessing on the question of whether he was going to project himself as the prime ministerial candidate during the next LS polls. He first said that he was not a candidate and then clarified saying he was not a saint. "The party will not project me as a candidate... but I am not a saint...If Deve Gowda can become the PM, why not somebody from the SP?," he said.

"Both the national parties are confused. They cannot take decisions for the good of the people... they are getting weaker day by day... unemployment and prices of essential commodities are increasing every day... we will go to the people with our promises,'' he added.

Mulayam said a third front would emerge only after the elections. "In the past, too, a third front came into being only after the elections... this time, too, it will come up on the basis of poll results of all parties,'' he said.

He made it clear that the SP will not field its candidate from Rae Bareilly, Sonia Gandhi's constituency, as a reciprocal gesture to the Congress which did not field candidate at Kannauj from where UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's wife Dimple got elected to the Lok Sabha. However, regarding Amethi, Rahul Gandhi's constituency, the SP is yet to take a decision, he said.
