Special teams crack down on ‘biker gangs’

The Ahmedabad police have launched a special drive to round up bikers performing stunts on the city roads and to keep a check on chain snatching incidents during Navratri.

The Zone I police have formed squads of personnel from 11 police stations to keep a check in west Ahmedabad and detain motorcyclists found performing stunts. The squads, accompanied by PCR vans, patrol between 8 pm and 4 am daily under the supervision of a sub-inspector rank officer.

DCP (Zone I) Neeraj Badgujar, who himself goes out on patrolling, said, "We have set up nakabandi points and keep changing them. The main trouble takes place when people return home after garba and bikers create nuisance with their stunts."

According to the police, 'biker gangs' used to perform stunts on the SG Highway, IIM-A Crossroads, CG Road and Naranpura, and were detained several times in 2010 and 2011. Now, they reportedly create nuisance on the 132 Feet Ring Road, Prahalgnagar, Sattadhar Crossroads and roads leading to highways.

Meanwhile, the Detection of Crime Branch on Thursday arrested three alleged snatchers who used to target women going out for garba.

The police seized three broken gold chains, mobile phones and a stolen motorbike worth Rs 1.6 lakh.
