  • Wing Commander Ajay Kumar Tyagi starts his day by visiting the Dwarka traffic intersection. He goes back home after manning traffic for a few more hours in the evening. Every day, for two years now, he has religiously been educating people on roads to follow traffic rules. Result of his enthusiasm: he has topped the list of ‘Special Traffic Wardens’ in the last two years by sending the maximum number of notices of violations.

Tyagi became part of this scheme when officers of the army, navy and the air force were invited by Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna to aid the Delhi Police in manning traffic two years ago. In last two years, he has sent 5,500 challans for various traffic violations. His contribution to the traffic challans is almost 20 per cent of the total (29,165) sent by all 452 Special Traffic Wardens in the city.

Tyagi even takes the help of his wife and children to find out about violators. “When I see people violating traffic rules, I stop them. Now, after seeing me at the intersections for the last two years, people here have started listening to me. I take down the numbers of those who argue or refuse to follow traffic rules and send them to the traffic police,” Tyagi said. The maximum number of violations he has noted in the last two years is that of traffic light jumping, Tyagi added. “Traffic police officials have also been very helpful. When they know that I am here at the intersection, they too feel relaxed.”
