Scores of students from Mumbai University (MU),who have got their marksheets with spelling or typographical errors, are an angry lot. Some of them are even contemplating going to court against the varsity.
Students allege that every year a large number of them are made to run from pillar to post to get their marksheets and convocation certificates rectified. The university issues them a handwritten provisional marksheet that is not accepted by any university, not even by its own departments at times.
A student of LLB from Government Law College (GLC) said,When I received my fifth semester marksheet,my surname was misspelt. So I applied for a rectified marksheet. Even after completing my sixth semester,I have not got a rectified marksheet. Instead,my name was misspelt on the sixth semester marksheet too. Another student from GLC said,I am seeking admission for LLM at Mumbai University. Initially, they refused to admit me on the basis of provisional marksheet, but when they realised that there many others like me,they agreed to accept provisional marksheets, but only till September 27. My parents and I are already consulting a lawyer for filing a case against MU,if I miss this crucial year.
Students also allege officials at the varsitys examination department are rude and do not cooperate. While some have managed to get the computerised rectified marksheets, many students are still struggling to get admissions on the basis of provisional marksheet, said a student.
MU has excused such students, but other universities as per rules will not accept provisional marksheets. Hence students cannot apply at other universities till they receive the fresh marksheets. A student of Bachelor of Management studies (BMS),who graduated last year, has been facing similar problem. He said,I had secured first class in final year BMS,but it was mentioned pass class in my marksheet. They issued me a provisional marksheet, but not the computerised one. I am working in a firm and cannot afford to run to the university every now and then.
However,Controller of Examination of MU Professor Vilas Shinde said,Most of the time students themselves make errors in the forms or the names are misspelt in the hall tickets. In any case, students must bring this to our notice immediately. But these students wake up at the last minute after receiving marksheets. We have to change all the details in our records and it cant be done in a day or two. It takes time.
