Five international DJs made Pune groove to a unique mix of styles and genres Hypnotised' is what instantly springs to mind when trance music takes over. And Puneites made the most of this effect when six international DJs manned the console at Area 51 recently. The spin masters included DJ Atomic Pulse,DJ Freak Show (Etay Avraham and Itay Dangur) and DJ Jermy from Israel,DJ Shanti Matin from Ibiza, and DJ Spike Me Mike from Mumbai. As they played their music, one after the other, the city witnessed a unique amalgamation of genres and styles. For Tamir Ozana, better known as DJ Atomic Pulse, this was his sixth performance in India and second in Pune. Talking about the party scene in Pune,he quipped,Partying is quite big here. There are lots of people who enjoy music and that makes me enjoy playing for them! Ozana found the concept of six DJs playing together very interesting. It's a unique concept more like a story. One DJ begins and the other takes it forward. There is no clash of styles, he said. Etay Avraham aka DJ Freak Show, who prefers to be called an artiste, has his roots in India. My parents lived in Mumbai. So,I am half Indian, he reveals. Though new to the Indian party scene,he feels that it is quite similar to that of Israels. His inspiration comes from hip-hop and latest electro and trance mixes. He personally likes playing electronic music, and names DJ Jan from Mumbai and DJ Kia from Goa as his favorite Indian DJs. Versatility seems to be DJ Jermy's second name, who, apart from spinning music, also promotes trance parties in his home country - Israel. Ask him about his inspiration and influence and he says,At the start of my music career,I played a lot of Pink Floyd. Later,I moved on to rock and now trance. DJ Shanti Matin from Ibiza,Spain, plunged into the world of Djing at the young age of 14. Spinning tunes happened by chance,he says. It was not something that I had planned. I was fortunate enough to meet the right people. Partying in Ibiza is probably every reveller's dream! He agrees, but also feels that it's catching on well in India. But the clubs here shut down very early which is a hindrance in the development of the music scene, he says. Like DJ Matin,Mumbai's DJ Spike Me Mike too chanced upon this profession. I started in 1996 when the DJ at a party didn't turn up, he smiles. Playing psychedelic trance,he also has a lot of Bollywood influence in his music. Shlokas and Bollywood songs add a different colour to the music, he says.
