Chirag United top I-League table
Viva Kerala drew 1-1 against Mahindra United in the I-League in Mumbai. Wisoot Bunpeng (29th) and Mohammad Rafi (54th) were the scorers for Viva Kerala and Mahindra United respectively. In Barasat, a double-strike by Joshimar helped Chirag United beat Salgaocar SC 2-0 and jump to the top of the table with 15 points from seven matches.
India win six medals
India won six medals, including a gold in men’s kabbadi, on the penultimate day of the Asian Indoor Games. With this, India’s medal tally swelled to 33 (four gold, seven silver and 22 bronze) and are now eighth in the medal table. Men’s kabbadi team beat Iran 57-33 in the final. Aron de Souza won a silver in the 200m freestyle swimming. Virdhwal Khade won bronze in the same event while women’s wushu earned two bronze. Pankaj Advani won bronze in English billiards.
Surjit hockey from today
The 26th Surjit hockey tournament begins on Saturday in Jalandhar without last year’s runners up Javed Hockey Club, Gojra (Pakistan) due to visa denial to the the team. The tournament will be played on a league-cum-knockout basis on the recently newly laid polytan turf.
Indians crash out
Prakash Amritraj went down in the singles quarter-finals and Purav Raja lost in the doubles event at the ATP Challenger event in Chuncheon, Korea. Unseeded Prakash went down fighting to Dutch Igoi Sijsling 6-7 (5) 4-6 in the $1,00,000 hard court event. Fourth seeded pair of Purav and Sadik Kadir of Australia lost 6-3 3-6 12-14 to Latavian Andis Juska and Dmitri Sitak of Russia.
