Somdev close to top 100
Third seed Somdev Devvarman moved closer to the ATP top 100, shrugging off a second-set hiccup to breeze into the final of the ATP Challenger tournament at Charlottesville. Somdev beat Ryan Sweeting 6-4 4-6 6-2 in a see-saw semi-final to set up a summit clash with second seeded American Kevin Kim, who downed compatriot Donald Young 6-2 7-5. The Indian is close to making the top 100, as he is assured 45 ATP points even if he loses in the final. He currently has 480 circuit points.
India lose to Saudi Arabia
India scored an own goal and conceded two late goals to go down 1-3 to Saudi Arabia in the AFC Under-19 Championships qualifiers at Arbil, Iraq. India, who played with 10 men from the 66th minute when Vishal Kumar earned his second yellow card of the match, took the lead in the 28th minute and led 1-0 at half time. But Deepak Devrani did a favour to the Saudis by scoring an own goal in the 55th minute. Saudi Arabia scored in the 90th minute and 94th minute to win the match.
Mumbai FC beat JCT
A rejuvenated Mumbai FC beat JCT 2-0 in a listless I-League clash at the Cooperage on Sunday. Striker Bashiru Abass scored the opening goal in the 63rd minute while skipper Abhishek Yadav slotted home a penalty in the 81st minutes to complete win.
Schalke hold Bayern to 1-1 draw
Teenage midfielder Joel Matip scored on his Bundesliga debut to earn Schalke a 1-1 draw at Bayern Munich on Saturday. Bayern defender Daniel van Buyten scored in the 31st minute but 18-year-old Matip’s strike in the 43rd gave Schalke their third consecutive draw and left Bayern winless in their last three games. Wolfsburg came from behind to win 2-1 in Hoffenheim, with Grafite notching the winner on his return to the line-up.
