Townsend beats Phelps
Darian Townsend of South Africa broke the 200m individual medley short-course world record on Sunday. Townsend clocked 1:51.55 to beat Michael Phelps at the World Cup in Stockholm and break the mark of 1:51.56 set by American Ryan Lochte in Manchester in 2008. Evgeny Korotyshkin of Russia set a new 100m butterfly mark (48.48s), Dutch Hinkelien Schreuder broke the 100m individual medley short-course world record with 57.74 seconds, Australian Leisel Jones set a new mark in 200m breaststroke (2:15.42).
Shiv, Jyoti retain cards
SSP Chowrasia signed off with a five-under 65 to join yoti Randhawa at tied 22nd after the final round of the Hong Kong Open. Chowrasia and Randhawa (70) aggregated eight-under 272 and shared the 22nd place. Randhawa and Kapur managed to keep their tour cards for next year by ending in the 100th and 113th spots on the money list respectively.
Anand loses, ends fifth
Viswanathan Anand went down to Levon Aronian in his final-round match to finish fifth at the Tal Memorial Chess in Moscow. Going into the match at joint second, Anand needed to win to join Vladimir Kramnik at the top but Aronian beat the Indian with black pieces. Kramnik drew against Vassily Ivanchuk and won the title with a total of 6/9 and a 2883 performance.
Bopanna-Aisam pair win
Rohan Bopanna and Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi won their second ATP Challenger doubles title of the season after a straight-set victory over Philipp Marx and Igor Zelenay in the final of Aachen event in Germany. The second seed pair won 6-4 7-6 (6) over third seeds Philipp Marx and Igor Zelenay.
