sports round-up: Salvi to lead Pune

Central defender Omkar Salvi of Krida Prabodhini school will lead PFC Under-15s in the All-India Youth Festival. The tournament, conducted by the All-India Football Federation, begins on Thursday at Nahan, Himachal Pradesh.

This is the first time PFC has sent their youngest team for a tournament outside the state. The team consists of local players drawn from schools in and around Pune. The 18-member squad will be accompanied by coaches Rakesh Walhekar and Mohan Dass.

"The tournament provides a perfect platform to pit our strengths against similar youth development sides of the country," said Ranjan Chowdhury, PFC Head of Youth Development. "Our endeavour is to expose the Pune youth to competition as part of our development module that begins at the Under-15 level."

Maharashtra wins two titles in West Zone badminton

MAHARASHTRA won the women's and junior girls' team titles at the West Zone Inter-State Badminton Championships at Valsad, Gujarat. Both teams beat the host state in their respective finals. The women defeated Gujarat 2-0, with Riya Pillai defeating Anjali Rawat in straight games before Manasi Gadgil and Saee Purandare won their doubles match after Nazma Khan and Tripti Lavania retired with the score 9-9 in the first game.

Meanwhile, the junior girls defeated Gujarat 2-1 in a tightly fought match. Rasika Raje defeated Anjali Rawat in two games before Rawat paired up with Anoushka Parikh to level the tie by beating Vaishnavi Bhale and Swatika Butey in the doubles rubber. But Shruti Mundada won the tie for Maharashtra, coming back from a game down to beat Anoushka Parikh 18-21, 21-18, 21-9.
