Srinagar attack: After uproar,Omar Abdullah rushes to pay respect to slain CRPF men

Furious CRPF men carried out the jawans' funeral ceremonies under protest.

The funeral ceremony for the five CRPF jawans killed in the Srinagar attack by militants turned into a controversy today as Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah absented himself from the proceedings,an act that infuriated the rank and file.

Loud calls of ‘Where is Omar Abdullah’ were made as the jawans coffins,wrapped in the tri-colour,were carried through the streets by their grieving comrades.

However,no untoward incident happened thereafter as both discipline and quiet were gradually restored.

Two militants and five CRPF jawans were killed and 11 other seven CRPF personnel and four civilians were injured in the suicide attack on their camp on Wednesday.

Two militants are reported to managed to have escaped from the area successfully.

Curfew has been clamped down on Srinagar and security forces’ presence on the street has been raised considerably

CRPF and police officers today bid a tearful adieu to their colleagues who were killed in a militant attack on a security forces camp in Bemina area of the city.

Director General of CRPF Pranay Sahay and DGP of Jammu and Kashmir Police Ashok Prasad led the officers and jawans of the two forces in paying floral tributes to the five CRPF personnel who were killed in the firing yesterday.

Sahay and Prasad laid floral wreaths on the coffins of the jawans before they were flown to their respective native places. Those killed in the militant attack are Assistant Sub-Inspector A B Singh,constables Om Prakash,L Parmol,Subhash and Satish Shah.

Meanwhile,IG CRPF,Kashmir,V S Yadav dismissed suggestions that the CRPF men were unarmed when the attack took place.

“We have a standard operating procedure and that was followed. One-third of the jawans of the concerned (CRPF) company were armed,one third were carrying the riot gear and one-third had lathis,” Yadav said.

Abdullah later drove to the airport and laid wreaths on the coffins of the five jawans before the bodies were airlifted to Delhi to be taken to their home towns. Union Minister of State for Home RPN Singh received the bodies at the Palam airport.
