St Stephen’s allows Life of Pi star Suraj Sharma to take semester exams

After missing one of his semester examinations on Wednesday, Life of Pi actor Suraj Sharma Churai, a student of St Stephen's College, will be able to appear for the remaining papers. Following submission of his assignment papers, St Stephen's College on Thursday decided to allow it's student to take his first semester examination.

"The college authorities have taken the decision to allow Suraj to appear for his remaining papers. He will get his admit card before the next paper," K N Mathew, the college bursar said. A first year student of BA (Honours) Philosophy, Suraj had not been given an admit card for his first semester examination.

Suraj had just 43.89 per cent attendance this semester and had not submitted his assignments.

When asked to submit his assignments, Suraj reportedly said he had misplaced them.

"The college had asked him to submit written assignments, some of which he had given on an earlier occasion. The rest was submitted in the college on Wednesday. After evaluating these, the college has decided to let him appear for the examination," Mathew said.

Another student of St Stephen's College, Under-19 cricket captain Unmukt Chand, had to face similar trouble when he was barred from taking the university exams in May owing to shortage of attendance. Unmukt, along with other sports quota students, had then approached the High Court on the issue and the court ruled in their favour.

College officials, however, said Unmukt's case was different from Suraj's. According to the university rules, a student needs to have approximately around 67 per cent attendance to be allowed to take his university examination.

Failing this, students, under special circumstances, who have taken admission under any quota and have been representing the college in any event might be allowed to take the examination.
