'Starving' widow wails for body of husband, takes protest from Pak border to Jammu

TO get back the body of her deceased husband, Kamlesh Devi, 40, today took her fight from border village Bhalwal Mula near Akhnoor to Jammu city, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, where she along with other villagers held a demonstration outside the office of Divisional Commissioner today.

Raising slogans against Pakistan, the protestors demanded the Government of India to press neighbouring country return the body of Chamail Singh who was allegedly beaten to death by two wardens at Pakistan's Kot Lakhpat jail on the morning of January 15 when he was washing clothes at a tap outside his barrack. The deceased had inadvertently crossed over to Pakistan in 2008 and was awarded five year sentence by a court there.

Kamlesh and her two sons, who had already lodged a complaint with local police about his disappearance under mysterious circumstances, came to know about his detention in Pakistani jail for the first time when they received a letter from him last month. In his letter, he had told Kamlesh that he would be returning soon as his five year jail term was nearing completion.

However, Kamlesh's happiness did not last long as a few days later, she read in newspapers that her husband had been killed in jail.

Since then, she had not taken food, Kamlesh said, adding that she wants nothing from government except the body of her late husband.
