  • The Gurjjars look set for another round of agitation with Col Kirori Singh Bainsla, who lost the Lok Sabha elections from the Sawai Madhopur-Tonk constituency, hinting at a third reservation stir. And that’s what is worrying Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot post-polls.

The Home Department have already begun gathering intelligence and deploying additional forces at known hot spots. Home Secretary S N Thanvi said, “There were two meetings of the Gurjjars on May 23 and May 24, with two more scheduled for May 29 and May 30 and a huge rally for June 10.”

Though the turnout in Pilupura on May 23, the anniversary of the 2008 stir that claimed the lives of 38 Gurjjars, was thin, Bainsla said, “The Gurjjar mahapanchayat on June 10 will be the biggest meeting where our future course of action will be decided.” He added that the Bill seeking reservation for Gurjjars was still awaiting the Governor’s nod.

Dausa candidate Qammar Rabbani Chechi, a Gurjjar from Jammu and Kashmir, has also threatened an agitation. “ I have decided to stay in Dausa for the Gurjjar cause.”

The Gurjjar community, which was fractured even before the 2008 Assembly elections, further slipped into chaos after the loss of the only two Gurjjar candidates — Bainsla and Chechi — in the LS elections. Both lost to archrivals and Meena candidates Kirori Lal and Namo Narain.

Anger among the Gurjjars has only increased with Bainsla’s entry into the BJP and his subsequent loss. “We do not even have a proper leadership, but the need for reservation has not disappeared either. We will continue our struggle somehow,” said Vikram Gurjjar in Dausa. While former MLA Prahalad Gunjal claims Bainsla is no longer their leader, Chechi and Bainsla are trying their best to gain acceptance in their respective territories.
