The state government submitted in Bombay High Court (HC) Wednesday a magisterial probe report on allegations of torture in police custody and usurping of property against former Mumbai Congress chief Kripashankar Singh.

Statements of witnesses recorded by the magistrate were also submitted to HC.

A division bench of justices Abhay Oka and A P Bhangale directed the government to give copies of the report to petitioner Tulsidas Nair. The judges also ordered police protection to him till the next hearing.

HC had ordered a magisterial inquiry on October 25 last year in response to a Nair petition and directed the director general of police to provide him protection.

Nair has alleged "gross violation of human rights" by Vakola Police officers, who allegedly tied him up in custody and forced alcohol down his throat.

He claimed this was done at the instance of Kripashankar Singh after he succeeded in obtaining an order to evict the Congress leader from three shops and three flats in Kalina, Vakola and Bandra-Kurla Complex.

Nair of Kalina is president of Rahul Gandhi National Brigade and claims false criminal cases have been filed against him at the instance of Singh, a "jealous political rival".

The next hearing in the matter is on February 21.
