State to ask Centre to address problems of madrasa teachers

The state government during a meeting with Madrasa Teachers Association on Saturday assured them for writing to the central government for regularisation of temporary madrasa teachers. Presently, these teachers are paid a fixed amount as honorarium under Modernisation of Madrasa scheme of Ministry of Human Resource and Development (HRD).

These madrasa teachers had staged protest outside the state Assembly on December 12 demanding regularisation of their services. Presently, Rs 6,000 is paid per month to teachers who are graduates and Rs 12,000 per month to post graduates. The payment is done by the Ministry of HRD. They are hired under the Modernisation of Madrasa scheme of HRD ministry wherein these teachers are appointed for teaching modern subjects as Hindi, Maths, English, other than Urdu and religious scriptures. These teachers are appointed only in those madrasa which are recognised by the state government's Madrasa Board. The board gives recognition up to high school. There are nearly 6,000 recognised madrasas which are part of modernisation of madrasa scheme, employing nearly 20,000 teachers.

In Saturday's meeting, Secretary, Minority Welfare, Leena Jauhri along with Director, Minority Welfare, Abrar Ahmad were present besides the representatives of the Madrasa Teachers Association. "Presently, we are appointed in the scheme and given a fixed amount. We are demanding regularisation of our services and appointment as full-time teachers. The state government has given us the assurance that it will write to the central government for our cause," Muslim Raza Khan, president of Madrasa Teachers Association said.
