State to check DTEd colleges for adherence to NCTE guidelines

The Maharashtra State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT) has decided to conduct an inspection of all the colleges in the state that offer Diploma in Teachers Education (DTEd). The inspection to be held from January 7-12 will check whether the collges are complying with the guidelines given by National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) or not.

"As many as 110 inspection teams, comprising both MSCERT officials and state education department's class 1 and 2 officers, have been set up. Around 754 of the1,045 colleges in the state will be inspected as Justice Verma commission has already inspected 291 colleges. The data collected will be analysed by a special committee within one-and-a-half month. The committee will comprise members of Justice Verma commission, SCERT and NCTE," said NK Jarag, director, SCERT.

"If colleges are found flouting the guidelines, they will be issued a show-cause notice. If they do not improve the situation in a given time frame, we will ask NCTE to de-recognise them," added Jarag.

The Supreme Court had appointed Justice JS Verma commission last year to review DTEd colleges in the state. Of the 291 colleges inspected, only 44 met the criteria laid down by NCTE. Criticising NCTE for failing to maintain the standard of such institutes, Justice JS Verma had said that NCTE's failure has 'adversely affected the quality of teacher education'.

"The inspection will not be conducted by NCTE but by state government. After the Justice Verma commission report on inspected colleges and other assessments, it was found that many colleges were not abiding by the guidelines laid down by NCTE. Hence, the government has taken a suo moto decision to inspect the colleges," said Sunil Shrivastava, western regional director, NCTE. "They will ultimately submit the report to us and then we will take the necessary action," added Shrivastava.
