The Catholic Secular Forum (CSF) on Saturday sought intervention of various government authorities against the state governments move to build an entertainment hub on 2,000 acres of land comprising eight villages between Uttan and Gorai in the suburbs.
Joseph Dias,CSF general secretary, said,We are going to give the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) a week to reply. If unsatisfied with its reply,we may file a public interest litigation (PIL). We want total eradication of this plan as it will affect a lot of farmers and fishermen.
According to the CSF,the locals will lose traditional livelihood as the owners of ancestral property will become the victims of land sharks. The proposed entertainment hub will have models of various monuments like Taj Mahal and Charminar. It will also have recreational facilities,a research institute on Indian culture, exhibition centres and mangrove parks. Speaking about mangrove parks,a resident of Gorai village, said,The required land can be acquired by either chopping off the mangroves or displacing the villagers. We would not accept both the options.
The CSF also alleged that the plan for an entertainment hub in this region is an attempt by the government to indirectly target the Christian community. They also feel that that ecology in the area will be destroyed. The CSF is also protesting against the move of the MTDC,which plans to set up entertainment facilities in Manori-Gorai belt.
