  • This (76 in 20 overs) was India’s second lowest total at home.

Their lowest total at home is 75, in 35.5 overs, against the West Indies in Delhi in 1987-88. On that occasion as well, India had won the toss and elected to bat. There have been 14 other instances, though, of teams scoring less than 76 after winning the toss.

It was also India’s lowest-ever total against South Africa at home and their seventh-lowest in 417 Tests.

This is only the second time India have been bowled out for under 100 against South Africa. India were bowled out for 66 in 34.1 overs in Durban in 1996-97.

The Indian innings lasted just 20 overs, which is the shortest completed innings ever in the subcontinent.

    It’s also India’s second-shortest completed innings after 42 in 17 overs against England at Lord’s in 1974.

Fast bowler Dale Steyn needed only eight overs for his five-wicket haul. Only one South African has needed fewer overs for a fiver — Jacques Kallis, who took five for 21 in 4.3 overs against Bangladesh in

    Potchefstroom in 2002-03.

Nine of out 11 batsmen made single-digit scores in the Indian innings. This is only the eighth instance of an Indian innings containing nine or more single-digit scores. Only twice have there been ten single-digit scores in an Indian innings, and both happened within three months of each other, in 1996-97, against South Africa in Durban and then against the West Indies in Barbados.

Sourav Ganguly equalled Javagal Srinath’s ‘unwanted record’ of most ducks for India against South Africa by getting his fourth duck in 28 innings against the Proteas.

Srinath got them in 20 innings. Later in the innings, Anil Kumble joined the duo, making it four blobs in 34 innings against SA.

Only five times have a team won after scoring less than 100 in the first innings of a Test match. The last time it happened was more than 100 years ago, in 1907 when England beat South Africa by 53 runs in Leeds after making 76 in their first innings.
