Quirky stat of the day: Virender Sehwag became the seventh Indian and 46th batsman overall to hit 700 or more boundaries in Test cricket. He reached this milestone when he hit his third boundary of the innings. The other Indian batsmen on the list are obvious picks: Sachin Tendulkar (1556 x4), Rahul Dravid (1273), Sunil Gavaskar (908), Sourav Ganguly (867), VVS Laxman (804), andMohammad Azharuddin (720).
Virender Sehwag’s 81-ball century was the second fastest for India against Sri Lanka in Tests, behind Kapil Dev’s 74-ball ton in
Kanpur during the 1986-87 series. This was also Sehwag’s second-fastest century after his 78-ball effort against the West Indies at Gros Islet in 2005-06. It was also the fourth-fastest in Indian Test history.
Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir put on 167 runs in a first-wicket partnership that lasted 31.5 overs. This was India’s second-best opening stand against Sri Lanka after Navjot Sidhu and Manoj Prabhakar’s 171-run partnership at the SSC in 1993-94.
When Sachin Tendulkar fell leg-before to Chaminda Vaas on Thursday, it was the 43rd time in 241 innings and 149 Test matches that he had got out in this fashion.
Sourav Ganguly’s blob was his 12th duck in 177 innings and 108 Test matches.
