Staying a saint in politics tough: Sonia

Congress president said good people should stay in politics because remaining a 'saint' in it is the 'most difficult' thing.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday said good people should stay in politics because remaining a saint in it is the most difficult thing. She also underlined the need for humility in politics.

Mujhe lagata hai ki aaj ki rajniti mein sant bane rahana hi sabse mushkil kaam hai (It appears to me that remaining a saint in politics is the most difficult thing). Therefore,it is all the more necessary that good people should stay in politics. Many people become arrogant after getting a political post. But only those who keep doing their work with humility get peoples trust and affection, said the Congress president at a function to release Rajniti ke Sant,a memoir of former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shyama Charan Shukla who died three years ago.

Paying tributes to him,Gandhi said,He got the opportunity to fulfil many responsibilities in public life and did his role with complete seriousness and sobriety. He was chief minister of undivided Madhya Pradesh for three terms and initiated several measures for the welfare of the undivided state and then Chhattisgarh. He understood the need for Green Revolution and emphasised speedy implementation of irrigation projects, she said.

Gandhi said Shukla was among those of the older generation who were steadfast with their views. It is true that many a time it might not be possible to agree with him completely, but it was not possible to negate the strength of his views… He never made any compromise at his level that could hurt his own prestige or that of the party.
