The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to increase the stipend of MBBS and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) interns to Rs 7,500 per month with immediate effect, but refused to accept their demand for parity with their counterparts in central government hospitals.
The decision was taken by the Cabinet at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mayawati on Friday. Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery (BSMS) and Bachelor of Unani Medical Sciences (BUMS) interns will also get stipend at this rate.
The interns, who get a stipend of Rs 1,950 per month last fixed in 1998 had been demanding stipends at par with interns in central government hospitals.
While rejecting this demand, the government said the increase it had effected was proportionate to the increase in the stipend of interns in central government hospitals since 1998.
