Chadha denied bail, police say she has not been cooperating

Saras Goyal, wife of former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda, on Friday moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking directions to restrain the electronic media from putting out "patently false" and "baseless" reports about her husband.

Kanda, chief of the MDLR Group, is in custody in connection with the death of former air hostess Geetika Sharma who allegedly hanged herself. Kanda and his colleague Aruna Chadha were booked for abetment to suicide after Geetika left a note accusing them of causing her mental harassment.

Acting on Saras Goyal's petition, Justice Nawab Singh issued notice to Haryana government and six national TV news channels for allegedly highlighting "frivolous" issues regarding Geetika's case and damaging Kanda's reputation.

In her petition, Kanda's wife alleged that electronic media was reporting on the case as if her husband was a terrorist and a threat to the nation. She sought directions to stop the electronic media from broadcasting any news relating to Kanda in the Geetika case.

"There are only vague allegations of harassment and employment-related matters against her husband whereas electronic media without any restraint whatsoever is bent upon giving coloured notions to the sad event. Frivolous and sensational news broadcast by news channels has created a fear psychosis and feeling of terror in the mind of her family," the petition stated.

Meanwhile, in New Delhi, the court of District and Additional Sessions Judge S K Sarvaria dismissed the bail plea filed by Aruna Chadha.

Chadha had sought bail on the ground that she has a seven-year-old daughter and elderly parents to look after. But police opposed her bail, claiming that she lied many times during her questioning and did not cooperate.

Public Prosecutor Rajiv Mohan said Chadha, during her interrogation, did not disclose that forged letters had been sent to Geetika. He said Chadha also lied about the date she joined MDLR. "When her conduct during interrogation has been such, how can she be granted bail," he argued.
