Body sent for autopsy, FIR against unknowns under non-bailable offences.
When a police team reached Kalighat in south Kolkata on Wednesday evening, the residents had no clue about the purpose of their visit. But they soon realised that what they were watching would be a first in the city — for the police had come to exhume the body of a street dog, which was allegedly tortured and killed by some youths.
The person who made the police take the death of a stray dog seriously and launch a probe was none other than Tollywood actress Debashree Roy, who had been handpicked by Chief Minster Mamata Banerjee to become Trinamool Congress MLA. An ardent dog lover, Roy, who also runs an NGO for animals' rights, came to know on Wednesday that a stray dog was being tortured by youths. She immediately sent some of the volunteers of her NGO to the spot. However, by the time the volunteers reached the spot, the dog was killed and buried at the market area in Kalighat. Roy then lodged a complaint with the police. Considering that Roy is an MLA and a well-known personality, police swung into action and sent a team to exhume the body.
"A case under Section 429 of the IPC (mischief by killing or maiming animal) has been filed. This is a non-bailable crime. The complaint was lodged against unknown persons and we have started investigating the incident," said a senior police officer of Kalighat. However, no arrest has been made till now. The body of the dog has been sent to a veterinary hospital in Beliaghata for autopsy. According to sources, preliminary post mortem reports suggest that the dog was beaten to death.
There have been a couple of instances in the city in which persons who killed street dogs were arrested after complaints were lodged. However, this is the first instance in which the body was exhumed and the autopsy conducted. Roy was unavailable for comments.
