A tiger, which had entered Annpur village at Gosaba in the Sundarbans late on Monday night, has been caged by the forest department personnel, said Subrata Mukherjee, Divisional Reserve Forest Officer, on Tuesday.
“The predator swam through a small river from the Pirkhali forest and killed a dog after entering the village,” Mukherjee said. He added, “The big cat is too old to hunt and was in search of food.”
The tiger will be kept under observation at the Sudhanyakhali forest, but if it is found that it cannot hunt, it will be transferred to the Alipore Zoo, the officer said.
Meanwhile, another tiger caught at Kultali on Sunday died at Ajmalmari, where it was kept under observation. It had injured its left leg.
Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has, meanwhile, asked the Sundarbans Development Authority to submit a report on whether tigers are entering villages in search of food or their behavioral pattern has changed.
According to sources in the Chief Minister Secretariat, Bhattacharjee expressed concern over big cats straying into human habitations at a meeting on Monday.
