Strong ties between Bar,Bench vital,says Sri Lankan SC judge

Justice Salim Marsoof,a Sri Lankan Supreme Court judge,underscored the importance of having strong ties between the Bench and the Bar.

Justice Salim Marsoof,a Sri Lankan Supreme Court judge,underscored the importance of having strong ties between the Bench and the Bar. Addressing judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the High Court Bar Association on Friday,Justice Marsoof,who is in the city to attend a seminar,said the judiciary could not feel empowered unless backed by a strong Bar.

“In Sri Lanka,at times the judiciary does not feel strong as the Bar was weakening,” he said. Justice Marsoof added that jurists in Sri Lanka follow as well as analyse judgments of Indian courts carefully. Justice Marsoof dwelt at length on the commonalities between the neighbours and recalled the warmth with which cricket fans in India had cheered the Sri Lankan team when they lifted the World Cup in 1996.

In his welcome address,Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur traced the relations of the two nations dating back to the period of the Ramayana.
