Dwelling on the emotional journey from youth to adulthod, Student Of The Year is the story of foes-turned-friends Abimanyu Singh (Sidharth Malhotra) and Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan) who study together in St. Teresa's High School, Dehradun.
While Abhimanyu Singh a.k.a Abhi comes from a middle-class family and aspires to achieve success and prosperity, Rohan Nanda a.k.a Ro, is the son of a business tycoon who shares a complex relationship with his father and subconsciously craves for his approval. Both of them covet the Student Of The Year trophy, believing that winning it would solve all their problems. Their friendship takes an unexpected turn when Shanaya Singhania (Alia Bhatt), the most popular girl on the campus enters the equation. While Shanaya and Rohan are childhood sweethearts, Abhi's attraction for his best friend's girlfriend and Shanaya's quiet reciprocation does not go unnoticed by Rohan. As a result, a rift appears in their friendship, turning Abhi and Rohan once again into arch rivals. What course will their relationship take is the question that remains to be answered.
